Shorin-Ryu Okinawan KarateKarate is a unique art. Although there are many fighting methods in practice around the world, they differ from karate technically and philosophically. The practice of karate is never complete. Karate developed in the Ryuku Islands over the last several hundred years. The Okinanwan Bushido (warriors) were often under circumstances on which weapons were not available. They were forced to face armed opponents empty handed. To meet this challenge karate was developed. Okanawa, the main Island in the Ryuku chain, is located midway between Japan and China. For centuries it served as a convenient stop over for ships traveling between those two countries. Karate, like that of architecture or music, is something that has been created by the effrorts of thousands of people over the course of centuries. |
